Whilst serving aboard the Enterprise D cochrane was approached by Fleet Admiral Santi and asked to begin instructing at Starfleet Academy. During the Breen attack on Earth Cochrane organised all the cadets and instructors to help defend the academy. For this brave act Cochrane was promoted to the rank of Commodore and was assigned as the klingon Romulan Liason officer during the dominion war.

During the final battle of the war, Cochrane was commanding the USS Craden a refited excelsior class battle cruiser. The ship took 15 direct hits to its primary hull before it took damage. Cochrane managed to get the ship to cardassia as it exploded from a warp core breach. Capt. Sisko rescued his escape pod and transported him back to DS9.

A few years later Cochrane led the taskforce to the transwarp conduit a lightyear from earth. USS Voyager passed through and Commodore cochrane invited the command staff to dinner that evening aboard the Prometheus - B a sovereign class starship.

When the klingon war began Cochrane was a four pip admiral. During the Vega Colony Cochrane lost 98% of his crew to the borg and had to abandon ship. This was the first court martial for admiral cochrane.

When he was found innocent he was promoted to fleet admiral and placed in charge of the 9th fleet

Later that year Cochrane and 4 other admirals, petitioned starfleet to allow them to create a new fleet and alliance of sorts. On that date STARFLEET ALLIANCE was born
